Nokia 8801 Review - Released last 2006, the Nokia 8801 was clearly marketed to target conspicuous customers. Designed to look stylish and luxurious, the Nokia 8801 is manufactured using stainless steel. It weigh about 4.8 ounces, making it heavy enough for users to feel comfortable. The 1.7-inch screen is covered by a glass but still manages to display rich colors even under direct light. When a button located at the bottom center is pressed, the keypad is snapped out of the casing. The stainless steel and glass material naturally attracts fingerprints and users would find themselves wiping the handset more frequently. Marketing this handset as must-have among stylish mobile phone lovers has been effective. The Nokia 8801 cuts a nice minimalist appeal. The keypad, although a bit small, is very handsome.

The Nokia 8801 comes with an internal memory of 64MB to support the variety of multimedia applications including a media player that could stream music via Bluetooth. To activate the FM radio, the user must attach a wired handset. The media player supports MP3 and AAC files and comes with repeat and shuffle options. Surprisingly, the unit has a five-band equalizer which includes pop, jazz, rock, flat and classical plus two user-defined presets.

The Nokia 8801 also comes with an SVGA camera for capturing images and videos and a main screen that features 262,000 colors. The camera includes several features including self-timer, night mode and 4x digital zoom. The video recorder, on the other hand, is capable of capturing about 60 minutes of video clips but that depends on the amount of memory available.
Measuring 107 x 45 x 16 mm and weighing just 137 grams, this handset can easily fit in pockets. Connectivity is provided by Bluetooth wireless technology which makes synchronization with the Nokia PC Suite and SyncML possible. The handset also features EDGE technology as well as the WAP 2.0 browser making high-speed data transmission possible. Users will be delighted with the ease of transferring images and downloading music as well as doing back ups.
The messaging functions of this handset allows POP/IMAP email although there are some units, usually those unlocked versions, do not have the same features. At best, the Nokia 8801 will allow users to perform MMA and SMS messaging. Calling features allows five-way conference calls, voice dialing and hands-free calls. The Nokia 8801 works with GSM 850, 1800, 1900 networks and delivers excellent quality sound. Standby time lasts for as long as three days and talk time is for three hours.
To summarize, the Nokia 8801 is one gorgeous handset, fully-equipped with excellent synchronization and connectivity. The music player also stands out among its many other features. On the other hand, the handset might be a heavy for some people and the lack of volume rocker and expansion slot for additional memory might be a deterrent. Its price is also a bit at the high end and users usually think twice before purchasing this mobile phone considering the not-so-great camera and short standby time.
