Nokia N810 ReviewOn October 17 2007 at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco California, Nokia announced the introduction of a new Internet appliance that they have named the N810. This new Internet Tablet from Nokia combines Internet capabilities, recorded music and GPS navigation in a compact large screen unit.

What the Nokia N810 actually seems to be is, is an advanced version of the Nokia N800 with some new features added and a few unpopular features that were on the Nokia N800 removed. For instance, one of the new features that you will find in the Nokia N810 is new and more advanced Internet Tablet OS 2008 Linux distribution, 1 which is also based on Maemo, 4.0 and it also has a newer Mozilla Gecko based browser, a new media player, a mapping application and also a refreshed interface.

Nokia N810 ReviewHowever; some who have tried the new Nokia N810 have registered a few complaints that are mostly centered around the keyboard function. While the keys are backbit, large and respectably more tactile to the touch then the keys on the Nokia 800, many complain that the top row of keys is positioned right up against the bottom of the screen which many have claimed can render typing rather difficult.

Aside from that one small area of complaint though the rest of this new N series tablet receives rave reviews. The N810 features a 2.47 inch by 4.13 inch 800 by 480 pixel, 65000 color touch screen. The screen is also translusive with a sensitive ambient light sensor, so it always provides clear and concise images in both bright sunlight and dim light conditions.

Other convenient features include a hardware key for quick locking of of the keys and touch screen. It comes off the shelf with a 2 gigabyte memory but can be augmented up to 8 gigabytes with either a microSD or a miniSD card. Its powered by a Texas Instruments OMAP 2420, 400MHz processor and Maemo, Linux based, 0S2008 operating system, so the N810 has plenty of power for all of its functions and applications and that includes the optional computer applications which can be added.

The N810 comes standard with a complete function WEB 2.0 Mozilla based browser which also includes AJAX function ability as support for any interactive web applications. Voice guided navigation is optional in the N810 but GPS navigation comes standard.

Also, it comes preloaded with maps that cover the area where the unit is purchased. It has a large capacity for storing songs and with the optional 10 gigabyte storage card it will hold up to a total of 7000 songs. So, all in all the Nokia N810 is a great improvement over their other Internet tablets that they have offered in the past.

Nokia 8801 Review

July 13th, 2007 aletheides Posted in Nokia 8xxx Reviews | No Comments »

Nokia 8801 Review – Released last 2006, the Nokia 8801 was clearly marketed to target conspicuous customers. Designed to look stylish and luxurious, the Nokia 8801 is manufactured using stainless steel. It weigh about 4.8 ounces, making it heavy enough for users to feel comfortable. The 1.7-inch screen is covered by a glass but still manages to display rich colors even under direct light. When a button located at the bottom center is pressed, the keypad is snapped out of the casing. The stainless steel and glass material naturally attracts fingerprints and users would find themselves wiping the handset more frequently. Marketing this handset as must-have among stylish mobile phone lovers has been effective. The Nokia 8801 cuts a nice minimalist appeal. The keypad, although a bit small, is very handsome.

The Nokia 8801 comes with an internal memory of 64MB to support the variety of multimedia applications including a media player that could stream music via Bluetooth. To activate the FM radio, the user must attach a wired handset. The media player supports MP3 and AAC files and comes with repeat and shuffle options. Surprisingly, the unit has a five-band equalizer which includes pop, jazz, rock, flat and classical plus two user-defined presets.

The Nokia 8801 also comes with an SVGA camera for capturing images and videos and a main screen that features 262,000 colors. The camera includes several features including self-timer, night mode and 4x digital zoom. The video recorder, on the other hand, is capable of capturing about 60 minutes of video clips but that depends on the amount of memory available.

Measuring 107 x 45 x 16 mm and weighing just 137 grams, this handset can easily fit in pockets. Connectivity is provided by Bluetooth wireless technology which makes synchronization with the Nokia PC Suite and SyncML possible. The handset also features EDGE technology as well as the WAP 2.0 browser making high-speed data transmission possible. Users will be delighted with the ease of transferring images and downloading music as well as doing back ups. Nokia 8801 Review 2

The messaging functions of this handset allows POP/IMAP email although there are some units, usually those unlocked versions, do not have the same features. At best, the Nokia 8801 will allow users to perform MMA and SMS messaging. Calling features allows five-way conference calls, voice dialing and hands-free calls. The Nokia 8801 works with GSM 850, 1800, 1900 networks and delivers excellent quality sound. Standby time lasts for as long as three days and talk time is for three hours.

To summarize, the Nokia 8801 is one gorgeous handset, fully-equipped with excellent synchronization and connectivity. The music player also stands out among its many other features. On the other hand, the handset might be a heavy for some people and the lack of volume rocker and expansion slot for additional memory might be a deterrent. Its price is also a bit at the high end and users usually think twice before purchasing this mobile phone considering the not-so-great camera and short standby time.
